Benue Assembly extends council caretaker chairmen’s tenure

The Benue State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, extended the tenure of the caretaker chairmen of the 23 local government councils in the state for another six months.

This followed a letter sent to the House by Governor Hyacinth Alia and read on the floor of the house during plenary by the Speaker, Hyacinth Dajoh.

The letter indicates that the tenure of the current caretaker chairmen is scheduled to expire on June 5, 2024.

According to the letter, the extension of the tenure of the caretaker chairmen will give the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, BSIEC, enough time to prepare and conduct the local government council elections.

DAILY POST recalls that there has been no democratic structure at the third tier of government since the inception of the present administration in Benue State following the suspension of democratically elected council chairmen of the ousted Peoples Democratic Party government.

Meanwhile, some chairmen enjoyed tenure extensions while others were replaced.

The nominated interim caretaker chairmen are directed to submit their curriculum vitae to the Assembly on or before Thursday for screening and confirmation.
