A BRITISH woman has been found dead in a Costa Blanca apartment as her husband was arrested as he tried to flee the scene.

The 64-year-old was found with stab wounds in Orihuela Costa, south of Alicante around 4am this morning.

Her 69-year-old husband also thought to be British, is understood to have been arrested at the scene.

He is under police guard in hospital with a knife wound to the stomach.

Police rushed to the scene following a report made by a neighbour around 3.50 am.

Cops found the victim’s body shortly after arriving at the property before arresting her partner.

A spokesperson for the Civil Guard in Alicante confirmed: “We are investigating the violent death of a 64-year-old British woman at a property in Orihuela Costa.

“We have arrested her 69-year-old partner who is also British.”

He added: “We were called to reports of a domestic disturbance at the property around 3.50am this morning.

“The victim had suffered several stab wounds and was already dead by the time officers arrived.

“The suspect was arrested as he tried to flee the couple’s home.

“He is in hospital under police guard as he was injured. It is not yet clear how he suffered those injuries and whether they may have been self-inflicted or were sustained during a struggle.”

A well-placed source confirmed the unnamed suspect had been at the centre of domestic violence allegations in 2019 but the woman found dead in the early hours of this morning had declined to press charges.

The case is understood to have been dropped by a local court the following year.

Spain’s Equality Minister Irene Montero tweeted: “Today’s murder of a 64-year-old woman in Alicante province is being investigated as a gender-violence killing.

“Eradicating male violence of this kind is a question of state. We need a show of unity from all institutions and the whole of society.”
